The Delta Zeta Chapter of Chi Phi was established in the Fall of 1981. Eight men living on the third floor of Beta Hall earned a reputation for their school spirit and antics during home basketball games, much like the Beef Studs of today. Impressed with their spirit and camaraderie, they were approached by Assistant National Director Don Neubauer on their interest in establishing a Chi Phi chapter at USF. Intrigued by the idea, the eight men resolved to take on this new challenge and, on November 10, 1981, the Delta Zeta colony was approved and installed at the University of South Florida.
Experiencing great success in their first two years on campus, Chi Phi rapidly made a name for itself as one of the most spirited and competitive fraternities on campus. This quick success earned Delta Zeta its charter from Chi Phi on April 16, 1983 and it officially became a chapter of the Fraternity. The subsequent years have solidified Chi Phi as a close and spirited group of men.
Whether the largest chapter on campus or the smallest, Chi Phi has proven the quality of its members, winning Greek Week a number of times in its 25 years of existence at USF. In the past five years alone, Chi Phi has won Greek Week once, placed third once, and placed second twice. The chapter today, because of its small size, is a close-knit band of brothers .The recent purchase of our chapter house off-campus allows Delta Zeta’s brothers enjoy a house for everyone to hang out without worrying about the limiting residence hall rules experienced by on-campus houses. With the purchase of this house and the celebration of our 25th anniversary at USF, Chi Phi is poised to soar to new heights over the next few years.
